The Fort Dodge Historic Preservation Commission
The Fort Dodge Preservation Commission is an agency of the Fort Dodge city government which consists of seven members, all citizens of the city, appointed by the mayor with the approval of the council, for overlappping five-year terms.
Duties of the Commission
- To promote the educational, cultural, econmic and general welfare of the public through the recognition, enhancement and perpetuation of sites and districts of historical and cultural significance.
- To safeguard the city's historics, aeshetic and cultural heritage by preserving sites and districts of historic and cultural significance.
- To stabilize and improve property values.
- To foster pride in the legacy of beauty and achievements of the past.
- To protect and enhance the city's ability to attract visitors who support local businesses.
- To promote the use of sites and districts of historic and cultural significance as places for the education, pleasure and welfare of the people of Fort Dodge.
- To strengthen the economy of the city.
Additional powers of the Commission:
- Make recommendations to the Iowa Bureau of Historic Preservation for the listing of a historic district or site in the National Register of Historic Places and conduct public meetings thereon.
- Accept unconditional gifts and donations of real and personal property, including money, for the purpose of historic preservation.
